News Releases > Health department ends well water testing

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (July 16, 2008) – Starting on July 21, the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health will no longer provide potable water testing to the public.

The elimination of the service is a cost-cutting move to keep the department operating as efficiently as possible.

“We continue to look for ways to maximize the department’s limited budget and resources and this was a service that was expensive to offer and not mandated by Indiana law,” said Department Administrator Mindy Waldron.

“There are other laboratories in the area that can provide the same service at a reasonable cost. So when our Lab Director decided to retire, it seemed like the right time to end the program.”

The department is notifying many of its regular customers of the change. In lieu of the health department, water samples can be taken to one of the following accredited private laboratories in Allen County:

  • Sherry Laboratories
    2121 E. Washington Blvd.
    Fort Wayne, IN 46803
    (260) 424-1622

  • A & L Great Lakes Laboratories Inc.
    3505 Conestoga Dr.
    Fort Wayne, IN
    (260) 483-4759
