News Releases > West Nile virus still a threat; City of New Haven to spray on Thursday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Sept. 28, 2009).The health department has found mosquitoes positive for West Nile virus in New Haven and the city will be spraying in the area on Thursday.

Mosquitoes carrying the virus were identified in a sample collected in the 2600 block of Dellwood Drive in Adams Township. The City of New Haven will conduct its own spraying in a half-mile radius of the area on Thursday evening, if weather allows.

Residents of New Haven who have questions about the spraying should call 260-748-7050.

Mosquitoes can carry the West Nile virus which, when transmitted to humans, can cause symptoms such as fever, headaches, body aches, swollen lymph glands or a rash. A more severe form of the disease can lead to neurological disorders, coma and even death.

Residents are encouraged to prevent mosquito bites by eliminating standing water on their property, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors and by using insect repellent.
